I could be wrong, but SCOTS may have done some shows with Los Straightjackets. How cool to have been there for the beginning of SCOTS. I've seen them 4 or 5 times, and I think Rick is great--I love hearing him do Rumble. They're from Asheville, right? Pretty cool scene in that town. I really like Superchunk, too--another cool Asheville band.

Nope. Chapel Hill; or Carrboro in actuality for SCOTS. Superchunk from there as well as tons of other folks over the years.Asheville is in the mountains. Chapel Hill (or Chapel Hell as Jesse Helms called it) is in the "Triangle" - Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Alwyas been pretty good scene for music; lots of clubs of varying sizes for bands. Saw tons of Ryan/Whiskeytown configurations. With all the universities, you get lots of acts coming through. Off course, my alma mater saw some pretty damn good GD shows...

DOH! That's right. Chapel Hill, of course. I forgot Whiskeytown came out of there--another great band, lamentably gone. College towns are great for young bands. Now I'm wondering who's from Asheville--probably some bluegrassers and old timey revivalists I've seen. Reeltime Travellers or Old School Freight Train (or Old Crow Medicine Show), maybe?
Wait a minute...a Blue Devil in Chapel Hill? Sounds like trouble. I finally figured out your handle--you're a Dukie, huh?

I stand accused. Of course, as seen on the news, a Duke student/grad can get acused in Durham whether or not something happened...

Duke--the Stanford of the South! Just kidding! One sister went to Stanford, and another to Berkeley and Harvard. I went to Humboldt State and Dead shows (go figure!)...

And when I graduated, I ran west and spent some good times in Arcata! Not to mention great shows at the Greek and Frost. Now that's HIGHER education.

When were you in Arcata? I was there '83-'86. Saw most of the Greek and Frost shows before they were banished from almost all the cool West Coast venues (except Cal Expo). Those were the glory days for this head...

Got to Santa Cruz in summer of '84 (first trip was prior New Years' shows when still SF civic) and the moved out to Lompico (in hills oustide SC in fall of 86). Started making trips up there then, but didn't ever live there for extended period. Taught high school up in Nevada City and Squaw Valley areas and was going to relocate there (arcata), even went so far as to get lease on place, but some family stuff happened and had to go back east. Relocated to Monterey area (laguna seca moments from where I sit at work) in late 2004.

Trips to Humboldt....hmmm....whatever for???
Welcome back to Cali (belatedely).
Love S.C. and Monterey. Grew up in San Mateo--spent a lot of time in Santa Cruz. My very cool uncle lives there, and we have a number of friends we met at the Strawberry Festival that live in and around the area. Don't get down there often enough. I've been in Sacto since '90. Miss the proximity to S.C., but don't really miss living in the Bay Area.
BTW, have you ever been to Strawberry? VERY cool--lots of music you dig. I'm sure you've heard about it on KPIG (another tragedy!) in the past. Dallas Dobro is the stage MC. Go to www.strawberrymusic.com Extremely family friendly, great location, great music.
Maybe our paths will cross someday at the Kuumbwa or Moe's (or Strawberry!)

Never been to strawberry, but know about it. Funny, but when I was living far away from here, I used to stream KPIG at work (before the recent changes to the worse). Sad.

And I do go to SC for my occasional music fix these days; however, Golden State theatre starting to put on shows here - Wille Nelson for two nights in late Feb. I'm going to help him raise more bail money. I'll be the asshole that shouts out "STELLA BLUE".

Judging from some of your other musical preferences, please give Strawberry some serious consideration. Once I went, I couldn't wait to go back. In a way, Strawberry has become my surrogate Dead scene. Great music, familiar faces making the two times a year pilgrimmage. RT shows up every 3 or 4 years--last time he brought his band for the first time, and flat out rocked the Music Meadow. The '07 lineups haven't been posted yet, but should be soon.

Check out some of the previous festival lineups (link from the home page). You'll be impressed. I cannot speak highly enough about Strawberry. Words cannot do it justice. It MUST be experienced. Any true lover of music will find bliss there...
